FSRDC Service Initiatives

FSRDC monitors and relays government surplus property information to non-profit organizations who have expressed needs and coordinates the distribution of items between the non-profit organization and the donating agency. Through this initiative, the Council currently operates Advanced Technology for Challenged Kids - A.T.C.K., a computer recycling /reconditioning effort, targeted to children / youth statewide. The project secures and reconditions, donated computer equipment / systems and distributed these items, at no expense, to challenged children / youth, their families, and to the non-profits organizations which serve them. This project is implemented by two physically challenged Americorps*VISTA volunteers on a daily basis. Free Internet access is made available to computer recipients, through the generosity of NetTally, a Tallahassee-based computer services company.

Members of the FSRDC Staff respond to requests which related to rural information requested on various subject areas which relate to funding, conferences and publications on such topics as (but not limited to): 1) successful strategies; models and case studies of community development projects; 2) small business attraction, retention and expansion; 3) tourism promotion and development; 4) recycling programs; 5) community water quality; 6) technology transfer; 7) closures, restructuring and diversification of rural hospitals and clinics; 8) agricultural health and safety; 9) health programs and services; and 10) criminal justice/prevention. Searches are at no cost and are conducted in partnership with the National Rural Information Center, a United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) project.

FSRDC in partnership with respective community organizations / jurisdictions implements a 35-member Americorps*VISTA rural team. Americorps*VISTA is a federal program that provides full-time volunteers to thousands of low-income federal programs across the nation to address a multitude of problems as defined by those communities. FSRDC team members provide community / resource development assistance to rural communities and non-profit organizations statewide.
